Nhưng với dáng người thư sinh, sức khỏe không thật dồi dào, chú quyết định xin nghỉ hưu sớm để tìm một hướng đi phù hợp với thể chất và niềm đam mê của mình. Và rồi, từ những ngày đầu chỉ trồng vài cây mai để chưng Tết, chú đã dần dần tìm thấy niềm vui và cơ hội kinh tế từ loài cây mang sắc vàng rực rỡ mỗi độ xuân về.
Ban đầu, những cây mai trong vườn của chú Công chỉ là những gốc mai thô sơ, không có dáng vẻ gì nổi bật, giá trị không cao. Nhưng với tình yêu, sự kiên trì và đôi tay khéo léo, chú đã tỉ mỉ chăm sóc, cắt tỉa, tạo hình từng chút một, biến chúng thành những tác phẩm nghệ thuật sống động. Chú chia sẻ: “Trồng mai, chơi mai kiểng phải có niềm đam mê thật sự. Một cây mai từ khi chỉ nhỏ bằng cây đũa, muốn thành cây kiểng đẹp có giá trị phải trải qua hàng chục năm chăm sóc không ngừng. Chỉ có ‘tình yêu’ với cây mai vàng mới giúp mình đủ kiên nhẫn để chờ đợi ngần ấy thời gian”.
Vườn mai vàng của chú hiện có khoảng 1.500 cây, giá trị mỗi cây dao động từ vài triệu đồng đến hơn 1 tỷ đồng. Nhiều cây cổ thụ quý hiếm có giá vài trăm triệu đồng, đặc biệt có vài chục cây được định giá trên 1 tỷ đồng mỗi cây. Đây không chỉ là tài sản vật chất lớn mà còn là kết tinh của hàng chục năm tâm huyết, công sức và trí tuệ của người chủ vườn. Chính sự tận tụy ấy đã giúp chú Công trở thành nghệ nhân đầu tiên của tỉnh Tiền Giang được Trung ương Hội Sinh vật cảnh công nhận là “Nhà vườn sinh vật cảnh tiêu biểu năm 2020” – một danh hiệu danh giá trong giới sinh vật cảnh cả nước.

Không chỉ tạo nên giá trị kinh tế đáng kể cho bản thân, chú Công còn là người truyền cảm hứng, hỗ trợ kỹ thuật và chia sẻ kinh nghiệm cho nhiều nông dân trong xã. Nhờ nguồn thu ổn định từ vườn mai, mỗi năm chú bán ra từ 200 đến 300 cây, thu về khoảng 1,2 đến 2 tỷ đồng. Số tiền này không chỉ giúp gia đình chú có cuộc sống sung túc, lo cho các con ăn học thành tài mà còn tạo công ăn việc làm ổn định cho 6 lao động địa phương. Nghệ nhân Lê Văn Y – người đã gắn bó hơn 10 năm với vườn mai của chú Công – cho biết: “Chăm sóc mai không hề đơn giản. Có hai giai đoạn quan trọng cần tập trung nhất là sau Tết Nguyên đán và sau tháng 6 âm lịch để chuẩn bị cho vụ mai Tết. Phải tỉ mỉ từ việc ghép cành, uốn tỉa, tạo dáng để cây không chỉ ra nhiều hoa mà hoa còn phải đẹp, nhiều cánh, đúng dịp”. Chính đội ngũ thợ lành nghề này, dưới sự dẫn dắt của chú Công, đã góp phần nâng tầm giá trị thẩm mỹ của từng gốc mai trong vườn.
Điều khiến nhiều người nể phục hơn cả là dù đã thành công, chú Công vẫn luôn giữ lối sống khiêm nhường, gần gũi và sẵn sàng hỗ trợ cộng đồng. Chủ tịch UBND xã Mỹ Lợi B, ông Trần Nhật Khoa, nhận xét: “Ông Bùi Văn Công là một trong những nông dân tiêu biểu, luôn tiên phong trong các phong trào tại địa phương. Ông không chỉ tích cực đóng góp cho các công trình xã hội, mà còn tận tình hướng dẫn kỹ thuật, kinh nghiệm trồng và chăm sóc mai cho những hộ dân trong xã. Nhờ vậy, nhiều hộ đã thoát nghèo, phát triển kinh tế, góp phần đưa tỷ lệ hộ nghèo toàn xã giảm xuống dưới 3% và phấn đấu đạt chuẩn nông thôn mới vào cuối năm”.

2. Hệ quả của sự chăm bón sai lệch
Rất nhiều người chơi mai dù nhiệt huyết nhưng thiếu kinh nghiệm đã gặp phải tình trạng cây mai cứ sinh trưởng (tiếp tục ra đọt non) mà không sinh thực (không phân mầm nụ).
Nguyên nhân: Đây là hệ quả của việc chăm bón không hợp lý, không đúng thời điểm, làm cây hấp thụ quá nhiều đạm, hoặc bị ảnh hưởng bởi các chất kích thích sinh trưởng như Xytokynin.

Thay đất: Tạo sốc cho bộ rễ.

Kiểm soát mưa: Để cây tránh nơi có mưa trực tiếp nhưng vẫn phải có nhiều nắng (nhất là nắng buổi sáng). Điều này nhằm giảm Đạm trong nước mưa nhưng vẫn đảm bảo đủ năng lượng quang hợp.
Sự kết hợp giữa quang kỳ dài và việc tạo sốc cùng với phân bón ít Đạm, giàu Lân và Kali sẽ tạo ra điều kiện không thích hợp cho sự sinh trưởng, khiến cây mai chuyển sang sinh thực, tạo nụ đồng loạt và dày đặc. Nên thực hiện các biện pháp này vào tháng 5, tháng 6 âm lịch.
3. Biện pháp chữa cháy cho cây "cứng đầu" (Tháng 7 âm lịch)
Đối với những cây mai quá "cứng đầu" mà đến tháng 7 vẫn chỉ sinh trưởng mạnh, chưa đóng nút, có thể áp dụng các biện pháp mạnh hơn để vớt vát vụ Tết:
Cách 1 (Sử dụng hóa chất): Chọn thời điểm cây vừa ra lá non, phun thuốc diệt cỏ (ví dụ: 24D) pha loãng 10-12 lần liều lượng hướng dẫn. Lá non sẽ cằn lại, không phát triển được, buộc năng lượng phải chuyển sang kết nụ đồng loạt.
Cách 2 (Ức chế sinh trưởng): Dùng chất ức chế sinh trưởng như CCC để hướng cây ngưng sinh trưởng và chuyển hẳn sang kết nụ.
Tuy nhiên, những cách tạo sốc bất đắc dĩ này chỉ áp dụng đối với cây khỏe mạnh mà sinh trưởng lạc điệu, nhằm mục đích "chữa cháy" cho mùa hoa Tết. Điều dễ hiểu là sự phát triển tự nhiên, hợp lý sẽ luôn tốt và giúp cây thọ hơn. Đối với những cây không khỏe hoặc đang bệnh, không nên áp dụng vì có thể khiến cây suy kiệt hoặc chết.
Kinh nghiệm của các nghệ nhân lão luyện cho thấy việc tạo nụ dày đặc là việc tất nhiên khi họ chăm sóc hợp lý. Còn đối với người trồng mai với số lượng lớn (như tác giả với trên dưới 10.000 cây vừa nguyên thủy vừa mai ghép) mà không nhằm mục đích thương mại, việc phải dùng hóa chất để xử lý như trên là một giải pháp thành công để quản lý vườn quy mô lớn, dù khuyến cáo chung vẫn là hướng tới sự chăm sóc cân bằng và tự nhiên nhất.
